What types of asphalt shingles should I use on my roof?

Class 4 Impact Resistant (IR) Shingles

Do I need to upgrade to a Class 4 (IR) roof?

There’s a couple of factors to explore when choosing to upgrade your roof. Consider the kind of climate you’re dealing with year-round. Is hail ever an issue? Is it windy where you live? Harsh conditions often signal a need for impact resistant shingles.

If extreme weather conditions seem even a remote possibility, we say go for the tough stuff. You need a roofing shingle that has been lab tested by the roofing manufacturer and is proven to withstand hail and provide reliability. A Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingle will provide these benefits and more, including insurance discounts of up to 30% in some areas.

All roofing products go through rigorous testing by independent, nationally recognized laboratories to provide assurance that product performance meets specifications. Impact resistant roof coverings are rated Class 1, 2, 3 or 4, with Class 4 being the most durable.

During a Class 4 impact resistance test on asphalt shingles, a 2” diameter steel ball is dropped from 20’ onto the shingle to simulate the impact of hail. This is done twice in the same spot. This process is then repeated on several spots. A shingle only passes the test if it does not show any evidence of tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting, or other opening of the roof-covering layer.

For Oklahoma residents, the choice is obvious. It may be time to upgrade your roof with better and more protective shingles. Contact 3 Dimensional Roofing 24 hours a day for a free inspection and estimate.

Dimensional Roofing Shingles

Dimensional Shingles (Architectural Laminated Shingles) are now the most used roofing shingles installed in North America, and provide a thicker and richer appearance on the roof. Dimensional Roofing Shingles also typically are heavier weight than Strip Roofing Shingles of years past and usually have improved warranty protections, which can range from 30-years to Lifetime.

Luxury Roofing Shingles

Luxury Shingles are usually laminated shingles that have a differentiated appearance or functionality from Dimensional Roofing Shingles. These products may mimic “old-world” roofing shingles to a certain extent, like slate or natural shake roofing shingles.  Luxury Roofing Shingles might also have functional improvements such as Impact Resistance or even Solar Reflectivity that can possibly extend the life of the roof and lower the energy costs of the home owner.

Is metal roofing for me?

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has many advantages and very few disadvantages. Metal roofing has been in use for over 1500 years and is one of the longest lasting forms of roofing materials.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing is known to be the most popular form of metal roofing today. The Standing Seam interlocking system hides unsightly seams and has factory finishes that are designed to last for decades. Gone are the days of the old tin roof!

Metal roofing has become very popular over the past decade largely due to rising energy costs. The energy savings over the life of owning your home really adds up over time and should be a big factor in deciding which roof to put on your home.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing gives you the flexibility to get creative. The color and design possibilities are virtually limitless.  Metal roofing has always been known to be a safer, stronger, and lighter roofing material that is resilient and lasting.

Sure, it will be a little more pricey than traditional roofing materials, but it most likely might be the last roof you will ever need.

What is TPO Roofing?

TPO Roofing is an excellent, yet cost-effective membrane roofing material that is suitable for all types of single-ply systems. One of the factors that makes TPO roofing attractive both in residential and commercial construction is its reasonable cost. TPO offers many of the same benefits as PVC roofing, such as hot-air weldable seams and energy efficiency, but at a lower cost.

Many homeowners appreciate the fact that TPO is manufactured to look great on many different types of homes. TPO is available in white, light grey and tan reflective color options.

Now you do not need to get a white roof to enjoy the energy saving and reflective properties. Latest technologies enable all colors of TPO roofing membranes to be UV resistant and “cool”.
